Different Stages opens its 2008–2009 season with Bernard
Shaw’s comedy Getting Married. To wed or not to wed, that
is the question facing most of the Bridge- north family in Getting
Married, Shaw's still timely discussion on the institution,
not to mention the superstition, of marriage. Family and friends
have gathered for an afternoon wedding but both the bride and
bridegroom have received pamphlets titled "Do You Know
What You Are Doing by One Who Has Done It," setting out
the liabilities each faced under Edwardian England's marriage
laws. Being sensible people, each has separately decided the
holy bonds of matrimony consist of little more than indentured
servitude. The prospect of taking someone for better or worse,
when there's no way of knowing just how bad the worse might
be, provides the Bridgenorth family with much to talk about.
Can they craft a more satisfactory marriage contract? Will the
wedding even take place?
Directed by Norman Blumensaadt (What I Want Right Now),
Getting Married features Michael Hankin (The Constant Wife),
Craig Kanne (The Miser) and Randall Lorenz (What I Want Right
Now) as the three Bridgenorth brothers - the general, the
eldest brother and the bishop. Carol Ginn (The Miser), Lindsey
Reeves, and Kimberly Pruitt play their wives, former wives
and intended wives. Nora Davidson and Daniel Rigney (Shakespeare
at Winedale) play the bride and bridegroom. Zac Crofford (9x9x9)
and Emily Erington (The Constant Wife) play the wedding planner
and his sister-in-law the mayoress. Tyler Jones (The Hollow),
Steven Fay (Stop Kiss) and David G. Robinson play the snob,
the chaplain and the beadle respectively. Photos by Bret Brookshire.
