Troades (pronounced Troh-ah’g-dess) is the Legend of the Women of Troy from ancient Greek mythology. Now as then, Troades explores the fruitless consequences of war for vanquished and victor. The hauntingly beautiful live musical score, stylized movement, and poignant new text combine with vibrant design and the elemental forces of earth, air, fire, and water. Celebrate 20 years in the Eye of the Storm with VORTEX Repertory Company, creators of dangerous theatre in Austin since 1988.
Troades (Greek for The Trojan Women), begins at the conclusion of the ten-year war with the Greek armies. The Greeks laid siege to Troy and engaged in heroic battles in order to retrieve the great beauty, Helen (of Troy), eventually resorting to the trick of the great (Trojan) Horse filled with soldiers. Now the survivors of the war, the women of Troy, discover that this end of war is only a beginning.
Based on Euripides’ ancient anti-war tragedy, this production is adapted and directed by VORTEX Artistic Director, Bonnie Cullum and features original text by playwright Susan Estelle Kelso (Roses and Thistles, Conference of the Birds, Insect Comedy) and live, original choral music by VORTEX Co-founder, Sean T.C. O’Malley. Euripides was exiled for speaking out against the glory of the state in 415 BC. His anti-war masterpiece has been re-visioned in this new production of Troades.
Starring Betsy McCann, Content Love Knowles, Kira Parra, Ashley Edwards, Emerald Mystiek, Elizabeth Rast, and Leigh Shaw as The Troades.
