SEASON 24 | February 2012
UpRise! Productions and VORTEX Repertory Company present
For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf
by Ntozake Shange | Directed by Zell Miller, III
Feb.16-25, 2012 Thursday-Saturday at 8pm.
TWO WEEKS ONLY!

PR PhotoFor Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf received standing ovations and rave reviews through its entire run at The VORTEX last September. We are delighted to announce that this vibrant production of Ntozake Shange’s award-winning play will be returning to The VORTEX by popular demand, with the same stellar cast for two weekends in February!

Here’s what the critics had to say:

"For Colored Girls is like live jazz. You may not recognize subtle time-signature changes or understand the precision of syncopation, but you know you like what you hear. You may not be a woman or black or an experimental theatre enthusiast, but there is much to appreciate in the sincere ensemble of this For Colored Girls. As Miller said in a talkback session, "If the saxophone player gets too into himself, the whole thing is fucked." But For Colored Girls never is". ~ Jillian Owens, Austin Chronicle, September 9, 2011

"Very much an ensemble piece, “For Colored Girls” melds dance, poetry, and music to convey evocative fragments of the female experience. Dealing with issues of love and abandonment, rape and abortion, the play is still relevant 35 years after its first performance, striking chords with women of all colors and backgrounds. Under the direction of Zell Miller, UpRise! Productions and Vortex Repertory Company recapture this essential and unembellished magic with their production of Ntozake Shange’s classic choreopoem . . Miller’s performers are clearly in sync with each other and the script itself, giving rhythm and nuance to each story". ~ Cate Blouke, Austin American-Statesman, September 6, 2011

For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf is directed by award-winning theatre artist Zell Miller, III. Choreography by Ananda Mayi Moss and Sadé Jones.
