Trickster
Presented by the VORTEX Repertory Company
Winner of B. Iden Payne Award for Outstanding
Lighting Design; Nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in Music Theatre:
Matt Hislope as the Fool; Outstanding Featured Actor in Music Theatre:
Gabriel Maldonado as the Monkey King
A distinct departure from much of the original work created by
the VORTEX, Trickster spins a joyous stylistic leap. This comical
romp into mythology, pop culture, and magic tricks seeks to discover
who is the tricksiest of the Tricksters.
“Trickster is pretty awesome . .
. a celebration of all things foolish, sly, and well, tricky”.
Joey Seiler, Austin American-Statesman
“Bonnie Cullum’s concept of those
weaselly mythological misfits who pull pranks and break rules .
. . is an extravaganza”. Patti Hadad, Austin Chronicle
The VORTEX Repertory Company presents Trickster, a
comic play with music, featuring mythological Tricksters from diverse
cultures. Created by award-winning director/producer, Bonnie Cullum.
Check out the Reviews:
The wily Coyote, Fox, Spider, Monkey, Raven, Fool
and other clever tricksters populate this multi-cultural world of
surprises, music, and, of course, tricks. Magical illusions, lush
music, hot dancing, and theatrical daring enliven a night of stories
about those who make human life edgy, unsure, and risky.
The ensemble of actors, musicians, jugglers, tumblers,
and dancers includes:
Matt Hislope as THE FOOL, Christopher Lee as PAPA LEGBA, Miriam
Robinson Gould as ANANSI, Michelle Flanagan, Traci Koesis, Greg
Spencer, & Kira Parra as THE KITSUNE, Elizabeth Rast as COYOTE,
Gabriel Maldonado as MONKEY KING, Yvonne Reed as RAVEN, Mark Dupre
as LOKI, Steven Fay as KRISHNA
Conceived & Directed by Bonnie Cullum, Scenic Design by Ann
Marie Gordon, Lighting Design by Jason Amato, Costume Design by
Aerin Holman, Musical Direction & Composition by Content Love
Knowles, with additional music composition and performance by David
DeMaris.Text by Bonnie Cullum & Susan Kelso, with Melissa Vogt,
