La Conquista An
Aztec Clown Drama
by Tristan Codrescu
presented by Madame Palmetto's Amusement Company's
VORTEX Repertory Company presents the Austin debut of New Orleans-based
Madame Palmetto's Amusement Company and their new production,
La Conquista: an Aztec Clown Drama by Tristan Codrescu.
La Conquista is a clown tragedy telling the story of the Conquest
of Mexico. It follows the dramas of Hernan Cortez, the Spanish conquistador,
Moctezuma II, the last king of Ancient Mexico, and La Malinche,
the woman between them.
It is a tale about violence, adaptation and annihilation; about
the Gods of Life and the Gods of Death; about politics then and
politics now. A clown spectacle filled with hope, reverence, and
foolishness. This cast from New Orleans weaves physical theatre,
puppetry, stilt work and dance to relate a history that is as important
today as it was 500 years ago.
