Promised Land

Written and Performed by Rudy Ramirez
presented by VORTEX Repertory Company

Promised Land tells the story of a gay boy seeking love, liberation, and a working toilet in the back-woods of Tennessee. His search leads him to Radical Fairyland, a haven for the queerest of the queer in the Appalachian mountains. Playwright and performer, Rudy Ramierz, invites audiences to experience vegan pot pie dinners, radical queer ninjas, freezing cabins, mountains covered in vanilla frosting, a store called Gay Identities 'r' Us, and most terrifying of all, outhouses. It's a story of finding yourself and maybe even someone to make out with - in the most unlikely of places.

RUDY RAMIREZ is no stranger to the stage. He is a performing member of The VORTEX Repertory Company. His performance at 5 Things Austin received honorable recognition at the "Best of" Anniversary Show (2009). Ryan Johnson of Austin.com claims, "When he’s on stage, he steals the show... with the audience enjoying every minute of it."

Ramirez is one of the founding members and directors of Spike Gillespie's The Dick Monologues (2007-2009). Together with Laura Freeman, he co-wrote the musical, Luna Tart Died (2008). He has hosted special events for The Texas Burlesque Festival, Burlesque the Vote, Carousel Cabaret, and The Museum of Ephemerata He is also the creator of performance pieces for The Rhizome Collective, Radical Encuentro, and The Austin Bike Zoo, for whom he most recently directed, Wheels of Wonderland (2009). Russ Hartman of AustinDaze noted it to be, "A great representation of why I love this town... a production of shining creativity."
